The rims can't be avoided no matter whether you are a minor modification of the performance of a street car, an upgrade of the appearance, or a re-modification of the track. What are the methods for upgrading and refitting rims?

Upgrading and refitting methods of automobile rims

  1. Rim size upgrade.

The most effective way to refit a car is to increase the rims. Enlarged rims refer to enlarging rims to fit wide and flat tires when the outer diameter of the tire remains unchanged. Enlarged aluminum alloy rims are a good way to improve appearance and performance because aluminum alloy materials have high strength and are lightweight. Aluminum alloy rims are available in one-piece, two-piece, and three-piece. The two-piece aluminum alloy rim is welded or nailed by one inner part and one outer part. The three-piece aluminum alloy rim is very advanced. It is composed of one central part and two outer round parts, and it is screwed together with aviation-grade screws. To reduce weight, most three-piece aluminum alloy rims use forged parts.

  1. Rim size upgrade.

The overall dimensions of the modified imported rims are increased by 2 inches and 1 inch, that is, the width and diameter of the rims are increased by 2 inches or 1 inch at the same time based on the original rims. For example, the original factory uses 14 × The 6-inch rims are equipped with 205/70R14 tires, and the modified rims are equipped with 15 × 7-inch rims, with 215/60R15 tires, which can achieve the goal of widening tires while keeping the wheel diameter unchanged.

  1. Rim width and quality upgrade.

The tire upgrade is not only to upgrade the tire but also to upgrade the rim. The rim can be selected only after the tire to be replaced is determined, and the rim width can be determined after the diameter is determined. Some users choose rims for aesthetic purposes, and aluminum alloy rims with novel designs are often their first choice. In addition to aesthetic factors, heat dissipation and lightweight shall also be considered for rim upgrading. Rims made of aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy are lighter, and their heat dissipation effect is better than that of steel rims. Heat dissipation has been taken into account in the design and modeling of rims.

  1. Rim mounting dimensions.

PCD value (PCD value is the diameter of the wheel hub pitch circle, representing the distance from the center of each hole to the edge of the circle) is usually written as 4 × 100 or 5 × 114.3 indicating that the diameter of the circle formed by the screw holes is 100mm or 114.3mm, and four or five screws are installed.

  1. Rim offset upgrade.

After upgrading the rim, the track width will change according to the rim width. The offset also determines whether the rim interferes. If the offset of the rim is not appropriate, the offset shim can be used for correction.

  1. Rim offset upgrade.

Another dimension parameter of the rim is the rim offset. If the center line of the rim and the mounting bottom of the rim are in the same plane, the rim offset is zero. If the rim bottom is inclined to the outside, the rim offset is positive, and it is negative when it is inclined to the inside. The rim offset of different manufacturers is different, which is determined by the manufacturer when designing the car. When refitting, the rims with smaller rim offsets can make the wheels move outward, making the car look more powerful. If the rim offset is changed from 45mm to 35mm, the wheel will move 10mm outward. If 35mm is changed to 45mm, the wheel will move 10mm inward. When changing the rim offset, the vehicle performance will be affected. First, changing the track width may cause tire eccentric wear, heavy steering wheel, or even shaking steering wheel. Second, the steering characteristics of the vehicle will change, increasing the front wheel track width will increase the characteristics of insufficient turn. Third, after the wheels move outward, the suspension will become soft due to the change of lever ratio.

  1. Prevent interference.

The chassis suspension should also be considered when selecting the rim, especially since the wider rim should not interfere with the wheel liner and suspension. The design of the rim shall leave enough space for the brake to accommodate a larger brake caliper and brake disc.
