The aluminum alloy wheels are not only durable, but also have a relatively good strength and toughness. At the same time, the weight reduction of aluminum alloy wheels makes it possible to help improve the fuel consumption of automobiles.
Aluminum alloy wheels are more suitable for passenger cars than steel wheels. At present, their manufacturing processes can be basically divided into three types. The first is casting. At present, most car manufacturers choose to use the casting process. The second is forging, which is mostly used in high-end sports cars, high-performance cars and high-end modification markets.

Aluminum alloy wheel production process
Gravity Casting
To put it simply, gravity casting mainly relies on the gravity of molten aluminum to fill the mold, which is a relatively early casting method.
The method is low in cost, simple in procedure and high in production efficiency. However, during the pouring process, inclusions are easily involved in the casting, and sometimes gas is also involved, resulting in pore defects. Wheel hubs produced by gravity casting are prone to shrinkage cavities and poor internal quality. In addition, the limitation of the fluidity of aluminum liquid may also lead to low yields of wheel hubs with complex shapes. Therefore, the automobile wheel manufacturing industry has rarely used this process.
Low pressure casting
Low pressure casting is a process in which molten aluminum is charged into the mold under pressure, and solidified and crystallized under pressure. In the same situation, compared with gravity casting, the internal organization of low pressure casting hub is denser and stronger. In addition, low-pressure casting uses pressure filling and replenishment, which greatly simplifies the structure of the pouring system, so that the yield of molten metal can reach 90%. At present, low pressure casting has become the preferred process for aluminum wheel production, and most domestic aluminum alloy wheel manufacturers use this process for production. However, the low-pressure casting method also has its shortcomings: the casting time is long, the material feeding and changing the mold takes a long time, and the equipment investment is large.
Forging method
Hot forging→RM forging→Cold spinning→Heat treatment→Machine work→Shot blast→Surface finishing
Forging is the change from solid to solid. The wheel hub style is formed by means of tapping, pressing, forging, etc. This process does not change the liquid phase, but it is a solid change. Therefore, its mechanical properties are higher than that of casting, and it has the advantages of high strength, good corrosion resistance, and accurate size. The grain flow is consistent with the direction of the force, so the strength, toughness and fatigue strength are significantly better than those of cast aluminum wheels. At the same time, the typical elongation of the forged aluminum wheel is 12%~17%, so it can absorb the vibration and stress of the road very well. In addition, the surface of the forged aluminum wheel has no air holes, so it has a good surface
